Can a good pair of shoes really change a child’s future?

Imagine a seven-year-old child walking to school in trainers held together with tape. Their bare skin pokes out of holes, and every step hurts. When they arrive, they’re too embarrassed to attend morning PE class, so they hide in the toilet and miss an hour of exercise and fun. Now imagine this scene playing out every weekday, for years on end.

This isn’t a crisis from a farflung country; it’s happening every day in the UK. According to education magazine Tes, around four million UK children live in shoe poverty, wearing wrong-size footwear or footwear that’s inadequate for their needs. Worse still, record numbers of British children are homeless or sleeping rough (164,040, up 15% in a year), often with shoes that are literally falling to pieces, or even no shoes at all.

A good pair of shoes can change a child’s future. With proper footwear, kids are more confident, feel a greater sense of belonging and are more physically active. So, how can we all help to deliver better shoes – and a better future – to children across the UK?

Millions of children, billions of missed steps

Fast-growing feet, the rising cost of living, and tough financial decisions mean that shoe poverty is becoming a bigger issue than ever. Yet compared to uniforms or meals, shoes are often overlooked by public support, although a lack of footwear drastically affects children’s school attendance, confidence, and overall health:

  • In the US, 40% of kids experiencing homelessness miss school due to improper footwear
  • 69% struggle to focus in the classroom, impacting educational development
  • Children wearing ill-fitting shoes face long-term foot and posture issues, such as arthritis, muscular and postural problems
  • Many struggle with self-esteem and belonging, shaping lifelong negative self-perceptions

Simply, footwear is a tool for equality, not a luxury. With the right support and opportunity, every child has the potential to become who they want to be. And at Soles4Souls, we’re on a mission to provide brand new athletic shoes to every child in need in the UK. Here’s how you can get involved.

What is 4EveryKid?

When it comes to tackling footwear poverty, how support is delivered matters just as much as what is given. Too often, well-intentioned aid removes choice from the very people it aims to help. Soles4Souls believes every child deserves more than a hand-me-down – they deserve dignity, autonomy and a moment of joy. But to get these shoes to kids, we need a safe, welcoming environment where they can take the time to browse, try on and fall in love with the footwear. And this is where you come in.

At Soles4Souls, we partner with organisations worldwide to get brand-new shoes to children in underserved communities. Our 4EveryKid team works with footwear brands, schools and community partners to deliver new shoes to kids, helping more children experience the confidence they deserve. And we can already see the real impact of our work together:

  • 93% of our school partners saw improved pupil attendance
  • Three-quarters reported stronger academic results
  • Almost all (98%) enjoyed improved social engagement & behaviour

And for the kids?

  • 96% are more excited to participate in school
  • 96% feel more confident about life
  • 95% take part in more physical activity

The results speak for themselves.

How can my brand be part of the solution?

Central to our outreach is the 4EveryKid shopping experience: an in-store event hosted by retailers, powered by community partners and supported by national brands. It’s where kids in need get the freedom to choose a free pair of brand-new shoes, supported by family, guardians and brand assistants.

Children get to try on different styles and find a pair that fits not only their feet, but their personality too. For many, it’s the first time they’ve ever owned new shoes – helping them feel seen, valued, and deserving of the same comfort and style as their peers.

“Thank you for thinking of me during the hardest time in my life! You have given me light. I can finally have something new, and not feel left out of what the other kids have.”

Retailers and brands fund the event in one of their stores or a similarly accessible venue, handling staffing, logistics and brand coordination. Meanwhile, Soles4Souls will select community partners (like schools and charities), and manage media outreach and social posts, to give the event the attention it deserves.

A simple way to make real, measurable impact

Footwear poverty is a complex issue, but its solution doesn’t have to be. Through 4EveryKid, brands and retailers can turn their physical spaces into places of real impact, in ways that feel authentic, joyful and community-driven. For participating brands, this means visible, credible ESG action that goes beyond a simple donation. It’s impact people can see and feel.

With our 4EveryKid programme newly launching in the UK, your brand can be one of the very first to host an event – and enjoy all the vast publicity, positive reputation boosts and instant CSR accomplishments that come with it. So, if you’re ready to get involved, we’d love to hear from you.
