In our travels, we have many “do-agains”, going back to some of our distribution locations to keep up with growing little feet. Tiffany, one of our team leaders, has been visiting the Maison des Enfants de Dieu orphanage in Haiti since 2010.
Mima, nearly 13, is one of the 60 children at the orphanage. She’s deaf, mute and mostly blind. But she’s also courageous, spirited and intuitive. When she “sees you”, you know it.
Years back, Tiffany had given Mima a brand new pair of shoes—drawing large hearts on them in the hopes she would see their shadows. And after pulling them within one inch of her eyes, she had. So as she led a new group of volunteers to the orphanage this past December, Tiffany wondered what the new encounter with Mima would bring.
One by one, our team sized and fitted each child with a brand new pair of tennis shoes that provide their small feet protection from diseases and injury.
That’s when Mima came up to Tiffany and inched her face close. She then raised her fingers and opened Tiffany’s eyelid, removing the last barrier between them. Eyeball to eyeball.
And she peered in. Tiffany’s heart pounded as her body stood completely still. Mima then leaned back, smiled and walked away. In that moment, Mima let Tiffany know that she “saw” her. That she was grateful. And in that moment, our team was reminded that these forgotten children “see” more than we know.
Today, I ask you to join us in reaching out to the forgotten children like Mima. For every dollar that you give, we can provide one more child a new pair of shoes. How many lives will you change?
