Soles4Souls is currently requesting and collecting new donated shoes and apparel to prepare a response effort to help those affected by Tropical Storm Florence and Typhoon Ompong. Florence brought life-threatening winds, rainfall and flooding to South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia while Ompong brought heavy rain and landslides to the Philippines. Originally founded as a disaster relief organization in 2006, Soles4Souls is a non-profit that creates sustainable jobs and provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing.
After speaking with our community partners in the Cape Fear and Kinston, North Carolina areas, we have learned that the worst is definitely not over for these communities. Last weekend at a local shelter, a volunteer saw a young boy walking around in hospital shoes and was told to “go put on your shoes” when he replied with “I don’t have any.” We also learned that a children’s home in the Kinston area was flooded for a second time after being hit by Matthew a few years ago. This time they lost all of their shoes and clothing for the children they serve while stating the aftermath was worse than Matthew.
The wrath of Typhoon Ompong is only beginning in the Philippines. It has led to the loss of homes and sanctuary for thousands of Filipinos. Evacuation sites are present, but there are not enough to supplement months of hardship waiting for community development. For the over 56k in the capital who were affected and lost everything, receiving new footwear would greatly impact their direct needs.
As the peak of hurricane season approaches, the organization is now working to collect, prepare and distribute shoes and clothing to victims of not only Tropical Storm Florence and Typhoon Ompong, but other potentially devastating storms as well. When it comes to helping communities rebuild their lives after a natural disaster, it is crucial to prepare now for future efforts.
