Rockstar Donor: Karen Hogan & Studio Art

March 14, 2012

Karen Hogan is truly one-of-a-kind. The bubbly artist heard about Soles4Souls and immediately knew she had to get involved. Her passion and motivation for the cause is quite contagious – so watch out!! She daily combines her love for her art and company (Studio Art) with the desire to help those less fortunate. She recently sent us her story – read it here!

I first heard about Soles4Souls on the news when they were doing a story on the bare foot singer [Michael Franti] who hadn’t worn shoes for years to raise awareness for the Soles4Souls cause and I started to think about how I could be a part of raising the awareness too.

I thought I should get involved helping Soles4Souls because I love to give back to others and I wanted to  stand for a particular charity that could correlate somehow with what we do here at the Studio – Soles4Souls was a perfect fit. Children come to my studio to design their very own footwear, which inspired me to start my Creative Shoes Campaign, where studio art donates one pair to Soles4Souls for every pair of sneakers decorated at our studio. The Campaign raises awareness for the children that come into the studio about the need for shoes and how so many people go without them. Donating to Soles4Souls allows everyone to feel good for being a part of the cause.

Studio art was founded by me due to life changes that forced me to enter the workforce after being a stay at home mom for many years.  I hold a teaching degree and  I love children so  I knew that I wanted to do something creative with kids.  It was also very important that my own five children could be a part of my work. They come and go freely in the studio and help out with the parties and fundraising events.  I am very proud of my accomplishments starting my business from just a few thousand dollars; diligently learning and trying to grow it to the point it is now.  We have so much fun with the children at the studio and this past February marks my three year anniversary. I feel very blessed to have these children  and their families in my life and I have made so many friends along the way. Studio Art is a very energetic place filled with happy kids having fun expressing themselves creatively! There are tons of art supplies, glitter, tie dye, paint and so much more and the music is always on!   Parents can drop off their kids for some free time or stay with them at the studio and enjoy a creative moment.  We offer drop-in, host scouting events, Camp and Birthday Parties and classes.  We Paint on canvas, design lots of wearable art, make jewelry, mosaic, pottery and most importantly design sneakers and rain boots which simultaneously help raise money to purchase footwear for S4S.

I am very proud to write that I have donated  the monies to purchase over  one thousand pairs of shoes so with my creative shoes campaignand hope that the numbers continue to climb!

My newest endeavor is to promote my patent pending take home sneaker kits throughout the country as a mission to raise even more awareness for Soles4Souls and to promote small businesses like Studio Art. Even the smallest business can make a difference in helping others.  For every sneaker kit purchased Studio Art donates $2.00 back to Soles4Souls.  They are available by mail order for purchase through my website.  Studio Art has also started an “On the Road Creative Shoes Campaign” where we bring the kits to off-site facilities like Camps and School.  When we go on the road with our kits we give $2.00 to Soles4Sous and $5.00 back to the organization that has scheduled us.  It is a great way for everyone considered to benefit.  We have scheduled our second “On the road” event at a private camp on Long Island.  It is my dream that we are shipping the kits EVERYWHERE raising awareness in a fun and creative way.  My motto is to help others while helping small business.  It feels good and everybody benefits!
