Saving the Planet, One Shoe at a Time

For many parents right now, working from home has its added challenges– like kids not being at school. For Sarah Morrison, a mom in Virginia, coming up with activities for her energetic 6 and 4 year old boys felt daunting at first.

“When the school closed for two weeks, then four, then indefinitely, I realized I was in way over my head. I needed something that would engage both of my children at the same time. A plan with a purpose. Something that would affirm what their teachers were striving for and at the same time, work for our family,” said Sarah.

After scouring the internet for ideas, she settled on a “mystery box” challenge. It’s simply a shoe box filled with letters from the alphabet. Every day brothers Chase and Shepard take turns picking a letter from the box, and then the whole day becomes focused on doing activities that start with that letter.

When the day came that they picked the letter “S,” the family knew they wanted to incorporate shoes. And what better way than collecting shoes for Soles4Souls?

“It’s such a great teaching moment for children to be able to give back, especially during a time like this. They aren’t immune to the sense of confusion and fear that seems to be in the air right now. Taking their minds off the sadness in their little world and focusing on the joy of helping those in need everywhere, is one of the best gifts I can give them,” said Sarah.

To make it more fun, Shepard decided to wear his best superhero outfit, after Soles4Souls challenged kids to dress up for the 4 The Planet campaign. Together, they dropped off a dozen pairs, keeping them out of landfills and in the hands of people in need.

You can make the best of social distancing too:

  1. Put a box on your front porch
  2. Invite your neighbors to fill your box with their gently used shoes and clothing
  3. Seal up the box and ship it to us for free through Zappos for Good!
